Finding providers who accept CHAMPVA

Educational information only, not medical, legal, or insurance advice. Confirm with CHAMPVA and your provider. Last checked against VA sources: October 9, 2026.

There is no CHAMPVA provider network. That surprises a lot of families, and it’s the main reason finding a doctor feels hard.

Who has to accept CHAMPVA

Hospitals and hospital-based providers that accept Medicare must also accept CHAMPVA. Individual doctors, therapists, and other clinicians in private practice do not have to, even if they take Medicare.

So a Medicare search is a good starting list, especially for hospitals, but it is not proof that a particular clinician will take CHAMPVA. Always ask.

What to ask a new office

Use this script:

“Do you accept assignment from CHAMPVA? That means you’ll bill CHAMPVA directly and accept the CHAMPVA allowable amount as payment.”

Helpful follow-ups: Will you file the claim for me? Do you need my other insurance card too? Is this practice hospital-based?

If a provider doesn’t accept CHAMPVA

You can still see them. You pay up front and then file a claim. CHAMPVA reimburses only its allowable amount, so you pay anything above it.

Care at a VA facility (CITI)

Some VA medical centers treat CHAMPVA beneficiaries through the CHAMPVA In-House Treatment Initiative (CITI) at no cost to you. Availability depends on the facility, and people eligible for Medicare can’t use CITI. Ask your local VA facility.

Coming soon: a directory that starts from public Medicare data and adds dated, family-reported "accepts CHAMPVA" confirmations. Medicare data alone will be labeled "CHAMPVA acceptance not confirmed."
