Frequently asked questions

Educational information only, not medical, legal, or insurance advice. Confirm with CHAMPVA and your provider. Last checked against VA sources: October 9, 2026.

What does the CHAMPVA card look like, and when will I get it?

After approval, VA mails a welcome letter and a CHAMPVA ID card. VA says it can take up to 6 weeks. You’ll also use a separate OptumRx prescription card at pharmacies (you can print a temporary one online). For a lost card, call CHAMPVA at 800-733-8387. Watch out for anyone selling “official” cards; only VA issues them.

Does CHAMPVA cover eye exams and glasses?

Vision coverage is limited. VA says glasses and contacts aren’t covered except in certain cases. See Vision and dental and check the CHAMPVA Guidebook before you buy.

Does CHAMPVA cover dental?

Only in limited cases, with prior approval. Most families buy dental coverage through VADIP. See Vision and dental.

How do I know if a doctor takes CHAMPVA?

Ask whether they “accept assignment” from CHAMPVA. Hospitals that accept Medicare must accept CHAMPVA, but private-practice clinicians don’t have to. See Finding providers.

How long do I have to file a claim?

1 year from the date of care, or 1 year from hospital discharge for inpatient stays. See Filing a claim.

How long do claims take?

VA says about 90 days.

What's the deductible and the most I'll pay in a year?

$50 per person or $100 per family each calendar year for outpatient care, then usually 25% of the allowable amount. The household catastrophic cap is $3,000 per calendar year.

Do I need Medicare if I have CHAMPVA?

If you’re eligible for Medicare, yes: you need Part A and Part B (or Medicare Advantage) to keep CHAMPVA. Part D isn’t required. See Other health insurance.

My claims suddenly started getting denied. Why?

A common cause is missing or outdated other-health-insurance information. Check your EOB for the reason and update your OHI with VA Form 10-7959c if needed. Call CHAMPVA if it isn’t clear.

Can I use CHAMPVA and TRICARE?

No. If you’re eligible for TRICARE, you can’t get CHAMPVA.

Is my child still covered after 18?

Between 18 and 23, if enrolled in school and recertified each year. Children who became permanently unable to support themselves before 18 can stay covered.

Do I need prior approval for care?

Usually not. VA lists exceptions: inpatient mental health, substance use treatment, dental (limited cases), and organ transplants.

Can someone charge me to help with my application or claim?

You can apply and file for free. For personal help, use a free accredited VSO. AskCHAMPVA never prepares or files paperwork for anyone.
